Communities Crushing Cancer (CCC) is a dynamic, resident-led initiative aimed at raising cancer awareness and increasing cancer screening rates. This impactful program began as a state-wide effort involving eight residency programs across Massachusetts and has since evolved into a national patient outreach event.
Thanks to everyone who participated, promoted and supported Communities Crushing Cancer in 2024. We will have pre-registration details online soon for #CCC2025. In the meantime, if you are interested in participating, contact us at: info@radhealthequity.org
Our Mission
CCC strives to educate patients, families, and hospital employees on the importance of Breast, Lung, and Colorectal Cancer screenings by distributing informational brochures and connecting individuals to vital resources. This initiative not only enhances patient care but also provides Radiology trainees with a meaningful way to reconnect with their communities and renew their sense of purpose in their daily work. This national movement plays a significant role in advancing health equity, ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to receive the cancer screening and preventive care they need.
Why is CCC Important?
Increasing Access to Cancer Screening
The CCC event focuses on raising awareness about the importance of cancer screenings, such as for breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. By providing educational materials and resources, the initiative aims to ensure that underserved and minority communities have access to vital screening information. This helps to bridge gaps in healthcare access and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status, are informed about and can access necessary preventive care.
Empowering Community Engagement
The initiative empowers Radiology residents and medical students to take an active role in their communities. By engaging in direct outreach and education, these future healthcare leaders not only contribute to public health but also gain a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health affecting cancer disparities. This hands-on involvement fosters a greater commitment to addressing health inequities in their professional careers.
Addressing Health Disparities
The CCC event specifically targets communities that may be disproportionately affected by cancer disparities. Through its educational efforts and resource distribution, the initiative seeks to address and mitigate the disparities in cancer screening rates and outcomes. This aligns with broader efforts to reduce health inequities and improve health outcomes across diverse populations.
Promoting Preventive Care
By focusing on preventive measures like cancer screening, the CCC event contributes to the early detection and treatment of cancer. Early detection is crucial in reducing cancer mortality rates, particularly in populations with historically lower screening rates and higher cancer burdens. This preventive approach helps level the playing field and ensures that more individuals receive timely care.
Fostering Collaboration and Advocacy
The CCC event collaborates with various stakeholders, including the Radiology Health Equity Coalition (RHEC), to promote health equity. The initiative's alignment with RHEC’s mission emphasizes a commitment to addressing systemic health inequities and advocating for policies and practices that support equitable healthcare access and outcomes.
Building Community Trust
Engaging residents and medical students in community outreach helps build trust between healthcare providers and underserved communities. This trust is essential for effective health communication and for encouraging individuals to seek preventive care and adhere to recommended screenings and treatments.
Mark your calendars! The next CCC event will happen on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Join us in continuing this impactful work and making a difference in cancer awareness and screening.
